31.05.03 11:45 The political process to settle the situation in Chechnya is developing in parallel with the transfer of law and order functions to local law enforcement agencies, President Vladimir Putin announced.
While speaking at the Russia-EU summit, Greek Prime Minister Konstandinos Simitis, who currently holds the rotating chair of the EU, said that the EU welcomed Vladimir Putin’s policy to combat the spread of terrorism in Chechnya. According to him, the recent referendum in the republic allowed a great step to be taken to create stability in Chechnya.
In his turn, President Vladimir Putin said that energetic work was currently under way on a treaty on the delineation of authority to give the republic the broadest autonomy.
